Pontiac, MI – Mayor-elect Tim Greimel has announced he will appoint Pontiac native Khalfani Stephens as the city’s next deputy mayor.

Stephens is a seasoned government official with over 15 years of municipal experience. He most recently held the position of Director of Economic Development for the Town of Flint and previously oversaw the Community and Economic Development Office of the Town of Pontiac.

“I am delighted to announce Khalfani Stephens as my choice for Deputy Mayor,” said Mayor-elect Tim Greimel. “Khalfani has an accomplished track record as a leader in municipal, county and statewide agencies. Importantly, Khalfani was born and raised in Pontiac and is familiar with the challenges and opportunities we face and will be a great leader in our resident office.

As Deputy Mayor, Stephens will act as the city’s administrative director, overseeing day-to-day operations and providing leadership for all city functions, including city budget, policy and services. The deputy mayor is appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the municipal council.

“I love this city and I am ready to help Pontiac enter its next chapter,” said Stephens. “I am honored to have been chosen by Mayor-elect Greimel for this important position as we work to create an inclusive municipal government that works for our residents every day. I can’t wait to return home and see our community thrive and excel!

Prior to his service at Flint, Stephens was executive director of the Development Authority for Clayton County, where he redesigned and revived an economic development agency in the metro Atlanta area. He has also served as Director of Economic Development for the Town of Farmington Hills and Director of Business Development for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

In addition to his work in municipal management, Stephens is dedicated to serving the community as a whole, including supporting numerous boards and commissions. He is currently vice-president of the Michigan Economic Developers Association, president of the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency, active member of the Pontiac Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and vice-president of the Pontiac Kappa Foundation.

Stephens holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration and Certificate in Economic Development from Wayne State University.
