4C’s science and technology center is key to securing Cape Town’s future

The Frank & Maureen Wilkens Science and Engineering Center, currently under construction on the West Barnstable campus of Cape Cod Community College, will serve all of Cape Cod, its economy, local businesses and the people who live there. Whether you are a full or part time resident, business owner or just visiting, the new Science and Engineering Center will have a positive impact on our quality of life on Cape Cod.

The new center has been carefully designed to meet the needs of Cape Cod, as it addresses existing and specific Cape Town challenges that are vital to its future. For example, the new center will raise all health science courses and certifications to meet the huge local demand in this area; it will expand and elevate environmental grades and certifications, creating a stronger workforce to tackle our pressing environmental concerns; and it will support the development of a diploma program specific to our blue economy, which concerns us all.

According to the World Bank, the blue economy is “the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and employment while preserving the health of people. [our] ocean ecosystem. ”

As a coastal community, with an economy based on tourism, all of Cape Cod and all of the businesses there are part of our blue economy. Running a business, living and working on Cape Cod requires us to operate specifically to live in an ocean environment.

In line with and in response to the Cape Cod Commission’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Report, the new center will launch an exciting new degree program. The Diploma Program in Applied Economics of Coastal and Oceanic Environments, which we have dubbed the ‘Blue Economy Diploma’, will qualify students for careers and mid-level positions that prepare them to perform their work in the context of a career. coastal community.

Students will be made aware of environmental issues, including biodiversity, pollution, erosion and sea level rise, as well as the economic impacts and implications for business. This new diploma, supported by the new Center, will apply to jobs in the hotel industry, oyster farming and health. The blue economy degree, along with environmental technologies, advanced engineering and manufacturing technologies, health sciences and a new biotechnology technician certificate program, will take advantage of the new center to increase STEM opportunities for students and better support local industries.

We would really like to find people here in Cape Town who want to stay home and work from home and help us develop the community that they are a part of.

Founded in 1961, Cape Cod Community College welcomes 6,000 students per year and is the only resource for higher education in the region. Over 80% of our graduates stay in Cape Town, forming the backbone of our local workforce. Our graduates become the owners of our small businesses and provide us with the essential services we all depend on, every day.

As a community college, 4Cs is agile, able to respond quickly to the needs of the community. The College has a long history of responding to local workforce needs, such as doubling the size of our nursing program in response to healthcare demands and working with Cape Air to address the global shortage of mechanics. qualified aircraft, establishing a new program in accordance with a national standard.

The new center will be equipped with the most modern equipment and laboratories available. Classrooms and laboratories will include cutting edge technology to meet today’s needs and be adaptable to emerging technologies. The flexible spaces will allow a variety of dynamic class configurations and settings. Learning will be enhanced through lighting, storage, lab setups, creative spaces, and a Maker Space.

Each degree-seeking student is required to take several science and math courses in this building; advanced resources will transform their education and improve their job preparation skills. The Center will also be a vital resource for our community, supporting research, innovation and other educators across the region.

The center will be LEED Silver certified, maximizing the sustainability of the building, and will be used as an educational tool for sustainable initiatives. An exciting example is having a toilet of the future on site, an innovation supported by the Gates Foundation. This toilet does not require water, but rather uses electrolysis to treat and reduce human waste. As wastewater management is such a huge issue on Cape Cod, this system can be studied by students and seen as a solution to our local wastewater management challenges, a challenge that affects every business and household in Cape Town. .

The Commonwealth and College funded $ 28 million of the $ 38 million construction cost. The Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation is responsible for raising the remaining $ 10 million. Cape Town philanthropist Maureen Wilkens generously contributed $ 5 million to this project.

Dr Donald Crampton is the Dean of Academic and Student Affairs for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Cape Cod Community College. Dr Crampton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Ithaca College, a doctorate. in botany at Arizona State University and worked as an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. Prior to this appointment to Cape Cod Community College, he was Director of Counseling and Academic Achievement at Mills College (CA).
